PHP Everywhere heralds the coming of an scripting era that will consume all:
Looking down at scripting languages because it lacks this or that is short sighted because it is the now and the future of computing
Questioning the applicability of a scripting language to solve all the programming problems of the world is anything but a label of failure. Languages and environments that tries to do everything will have little value to for anything.
The ranging debate over how far scripting languages, and PHP in particular, can be stretched within their technical limitations are utterly uninteresting. You can bend most anything tool to do most anything — giving infinite time, resources, and zeal.
What is interesting is exploring the bounderies of applicability. Not whether it can be done, but whether it should be done.
Imagine an application that calls for tall class hierarchies, where advanced OOP techniques are deemed appropriate, and your level of criticality mandates strict testing procedures. Is it then worthwhile to pick a platform that offers little in explicit support and requires you to build most everything yourself? Of course not.
Now imagine an application that needs to be installed on cheap hosting servers, have developers of ranging skill, and primarily needs to ferry data in a non-critical way back and forth between a database. Is it worth bringing out the heavy cavalery for that? Of course not.
Plenty of developing goes on in both ends of the spectrum to keep tailored solutions around. There's no need to be envious or spiteful against the different tools.

I agree. PHP is not the answer to every web application. Not even close. Your comparison is a great example of two widely different things, for which two different technologies are needed.
