When veteran programmers decry the fall of another bastion of complexity, I believe it can in part be explained by the myth of limited demand. Classic examples includes how VBScript moved Windows GUI-programming out of the C++ domain and into "In 14 days..." land and how XML-RPC and, to a lesser extend, SOAP made distributed systems likewise accessible.
The veteran reasoning bemoans the unleash of shoddy applications, suffering from leaking abstractions, and the devaluation of the noble profession of programming. They assume sympathy for the poor clients who will unwittingly fall into the hands of these hacks.
But why? Because they truly care whether some client, somewhere are living among bugs and inefficiencies created by those who hasn't walked the same hard and long path as they? I doubt it. More likely it is because of personal fear.
The fear that steams from cooker of doubts. What if clients in general can't tell the difference between shoddy work and pristine creations? What if my client or employer can't tell the difference? Or even worse, what if they can tell the difference, but don't care?
This first line of reasoning share fellowship with that of the factory workers who protest the introduction of new machines. It gains traction by the assumption that there are a finite and stable amount of problems to be solved by computers and programmers in this world. That when the hacks win contracts, there's going to be that less work to go around.
But the economy and theory of demand doesn't work like that. When the price of a good goes down, demand follows invertedly. There's loads of corporate computational problems that aren't being offered because the price of solving said problems is higher than their gains. When a hack is offering his services at $25/hour, these problems become relevant to solve. So lower prices (of lower quality work) creates more problems to solve.
The second line of reasoning, however, offers more to be debated. What if a corporation discovers that a job worth $10,000 in savings can be solved in a 80% satisfactory way for $3,000 or a 100% satisfactory way for $6,000? They might very well go for the cheaper 80% solution.
I'd wager, though, that increasing the amount of low-price solutions produced will begat more high-priced solutions in return. Corporations gain greater familiarity with solving problems with technology and hence will push for similar savings in more places. So the $10M saving becomes more appealing even though the development price is $8M. As a result of (perceived?) lower risk.
Regardless of the economic chain of effects, I'd wish veteran developers would be more honest in their motivations both ex- and internally. Stop thinking as if every conceivable problem requires your intellect or the solution will be intolerable. Different problems have different price tags. When the hacks starts picking the low-hanging fruit, climb higher.
