What a pleasent surprise to have my opinions discovered by the company itself. It makes me even more comfortable recommending pvPlayer when I know the company listens its customers and checks weblogs. Great!
So now that I have your attention, pvPlayer team, I'd like to suggest a few changes to the application on the 3650. As you might have noticed, I complained about the "horrible user interface". But it's not worse than implementing the following changes could lift it to "great".
User interface
- Preference setting for full screen: Who would willingly sacrifice 30% of the horizontal screen real-estate for a pvPlayer logo and a reminder of what the left and right actions buttons do? Not me. Hence, I always use full-screen mode. Therefore, it's quite annoying that I have to instruct pvPlayer to go full screen on every single movie start. Make it a general option that's remembered and consider making it the default mode.
- Don't leave full-screen mode on pause: It's currently not possible to pause a movie without going back to portrait mode. Which mean I have to labour through the menus another time to return to full-screen mode when I'm ready to play again. That's bad. Pause shouldn't alter the view mode, just pause the movie.
- Hotkeys for back to movie list, mute, and mode switch: The pop-up menu is for learning what a program can do. In every day usage, we need hotkeys. The Nokia picture viewer is an excellent example of smooth a well thought out set of hotkeys can do for the usability.
- More information on the movie list: A fixed-sorted list of file names is a bit raw for my opinion. Have a look at the Nokia picture catalog and present the movies in a similar fashion. Important information includes a movie thumbnail (a frame 1 minute into the thing that's not predominately black), playing time, and file size. The possibility to sort the list by movie creation date would also be nice (so I would get the newest movies at the top).
- Much larger URL input field: The current field holds "www.loudthinking.c" before it starts scrolling. That makes it kinda hard to maintain an overview if you're looking to enter "www.loudthinking.com/share/bitTests/bit100frame15.3gp". Change it to a full-page entering screen, like the one Nokia uses in the message center for entering server adresses.
Additional features
- Bookmarks: Watching movies on the go is rarely done in a single session. I'd like to have my 30-minute Simpsons episode as a piece meal. But there's no support for watching a movie in more than one sitting. I propose introducing a bookmark option that'll let you mark a point in movie that you can then return to. It could even be the default behavour to add a bookmark when a movie is stopped before time. ReaderM works like that for books and it's wonderful. Be sure to include bookmark information on the movie list.
- Jump to time mark: I sometimes start watching a movie at home that I'd like to continue watching on the go. But I don't want to rewatch the first 10 minutes I already saw. Include an option to go to a specific time mark, like 18:53.
- Stretch native movies to fill the screen: In portrait mode, movies recorded with the internal 3650 video recorder has a set of thick black borders on all sides. Couldn't you stretch it like the native player does?
Bugs
- "Program closed PVPlayer KERN-EXEC 3": I've recieved this error about five or six times. The two last times was while I was entering an URL and pressed the symbols button on the keyboard. Quite an unfortunately place to crash since I already spend a long time entering "www.loudthinking.com" before reaching the point where I needed a "/".

Hi,
I found your website while looking through information regarding the PVPLAYER and the NOKIA 3650.
I am also trying to play DVD rips etc and having good fun.
However , i purchased PVPLAYER through HANDANGO for $16.99 and nowhere in the package did it mention an unlock code of some kind.
Whenever i use the player it says UNREGISTERED VERSION over the top of the film etc.
Did you have any problems like this or should i have received an unlock code etc via email.
Any help would be gratefully accepted.
