Before last Thursday, I wondered how a company like Speednames could be successful selling domain names at a 400%+ mark-up. They do the two-year leases for around $85. The same commodity that goes for around $20 on Buy Domains. That was before I knew what an excruciating process it is to switch service provider.
But I learned. Oh, I learned.
Loudthinking.com was up for renewal about a month ago. Speednames duly sent me a notice politely recommending their hugely over-priced product. I usually have better things to spend $65 on, so I thought I'd move the domain over to Buy Domains — joining the other five domains they manage for me. Thus ensued The Month of Uncertainty.
For a few weeks, I heard absolutely nothing. Then suddenly, I received a few mails asking for my approval of the transfer. They were just links leading to some obscure URL with a bad design. Not very reassuring. Authorizing the transfer did little to reduce the uncertainty. At no time, neither before nor after the approval, did either of the companies give me any idea of how long this would take or what it would entail. Extremely poor expectation management.
A few more days pass by. Speednames sends me a receipt for my approval and state their regret for loosing my business. I reply, saying it was all about the money — no hard feelings. No response. But worse yet, I can no longer manage Loudthinking.com from Speednames nor has control been handed to BuyDomains, so I can manage it from there. Hence, I have no way to update any of the information regarding my domain.
Which, as Murphy would predict and enforce, was exactly what I would need shortly thereafter. The server loudthinking.com used to be hosted on had to be moved pronto, which left an empty void at the old IP address. So loudthinking.com went black.
This brings us to about Thursday. The weekend would feature four desperate claims for help to get Buy Domains to fix the broken DNS pointer. Live support was down the entire time. The promise to handle all support calls within 24 hours and likely one seemed to be on a holiday as well. Then, Monday!, I received the first confirmation that any of my cries for help had been heard. They told me to wait another 24 hours or call a U.S. number.
And now, finally, I'm back online. What a nightmare. What an incredible barrier to switch service provider. Had I known about all this trouble, I'd thought twice about switching. Which, of course, is how Speednames can be way out of touch with market prices and still do fine.

The "funny" thing is that it is just as big a nightmare to move domains to speednames!
Recently I had to move 30 to 40 domainnames to speednames for a client. It took me about 2 months to get speednames to get the job done, so maybe you are right that they makes it diffecult to move the domain as a way of keeping their business. However I think that they are just hopelessly bad at controlling their business processes.
Luckily for me I did not have server problems, so nothing went offline ;)

on a simuler note. I also had 2 domains @ speednames. and i wanted to move them _after_ they expired. To this date, i still havent been able to get my domains back. A friend of ours then told me to forget about the domains and get a new one, since i would be able to get them back. :(

Hmm - It sounds kind of wierd. I work for a service provider myself, and I moved a .com domain from struer.net over to where I work. It took two or three days, and I had full control of the domain.
That is the average time it takes to move a domain.
I sent a mail to struer.net to let them know that I was moving my domain. We sent a transfer request the same day. Next morning I had a mail from joker, asking for my approval to move the domain. Next morning the domain was moved to hour nameservers. All I had to do then, was to wait for the nameservers around the world to update.

Uh, com/net/org domain names cost $6 wholesale from VeriSign GRS, the registry operator, so Speednames's $85 is actually a 600%+ markup.

I've had two difficulties with Speednames; the first was getting some registry data (NS) changed in 2002 on a .us site which I got in the lottery from them-it took six months. I'm now changing again and they completely ignore you for weeks. Here's the last e-mail I sent:
"Another days passes with nobody responding to my simple, but important request.
If I continue to get no response, I will be sending a new domain I have just purchased, www.SpeednamesSucks.info , to my web developer to write/build a site and bulletin board. Likely by the end of this week it will be sent to my web-optimization-team for Special refinement for major search engines and to initiate worldwide engine submissions (everysite I own is "Top 5" rated in all major search engines-this will be no exception). It will be hosted on my server. As I also own several internet translation companies in North America, I may follow later with LanguageSpecific ASP sites for all European language specific search engines.
Please respond to my simple request?
I do not like being ignored and I also do not like dealing with a poorly run domain host, I have not found out which group www.speednames.com falls into? You have started to cost me money and I will ensure that the favour will be returned in spades."
I copied some of the Ascio board members,,,I don't think it will go anywhere but companies like this piss me off. If they get back soon I'll leave it for now.
