As private wifi spots lay claim to an ever growing span of band, it's paramount that a sense of wifiquette is established. The emerging social wifi commands it.
Most fundemental to the rules of wifiquette are those revolving around restriction of access. It is hence forth considered selfish to shield a signal behind an unguessable password.
Instead, access restrictions should be applied as a scale of reference difficulty. Those of giving nature will pick an easy reference, those of a secluded nature will pick a hard reference. The only absolute rule is:
Honor the reference
You honer a reference by staying consistent to the universe from which the reference was chosen.
For example, there's a wifi signal in my apartment by the name of "Minasmoria". This is of course a reference to the dwarfen mines in Lord of The Rings through which our fellowship wish to pass. In the movie, entrance is guarded by the riddle "Speak 'friend' and enter" to which the answer is the Elvish word for friend, "mellon". Then, in order to uphold rule one of wifiquette, the broadcaster of "Minasmoria" should have picked "mellon" as his password.
Personally, I've picked an even easier reference: "Deadly Sins". Use the comments to make a guess at my password.

I disagree... My network is sealed with a waterprof MAC-filter.
From my point of view there's two perspectives to this issue; one being the desire for an all-accessable broadband network - like the FM radio or the celluarphones, which I think is a brilliant idea (wonder if the government is gonna pay or the majority of Internet users with a wireless connection will end up making the national network...).
The other being asking my self two questions:
Why do I want to sponsor my neighbors desire for downloading movies?
And why do I want to put my self at even greater risk of having my system attacked?
A funny thing in regard to the national network: Try the MacStumbler program, turn on your iBook when driving around in Copenhagen - count how many open and exposed networks you encounter. I once borrowed the Navy of Finlands network on a mine vessel, just by parking next to it - though it was in Sweden, it's still possible to check e-mail driving 30 mph on Roskildevej - spooky :O)

Please keep in mind that current wi-fi security is pretty much a joke. Hiding your SSID is not secure, MAC filtering is not secure, WEP keys are not secure; d'oh.

Concerning WiFi and Security:
There are so many solutions for security over WiFi, I always use SSH and VPN when I connect over WiFi to delicate sites like my bank and mail. But except from that, I don't give a rats ass about people sniffing my ProN surfing or check out what I'm doing on the net. My laptop is protected by a softwarefirewall, my AP has it's own firewall which give me some kind of security.
If people want to use my AP for illegal activities, then I can't do anything about except turning it of! But I gain more than I loose by having an open AP.

What's the security problems in MAC filtering, SSID covering and WEP keys?
Except the obviously:
- Knowing the SSID
- Knowing the WEP keys
- Stealing hardware that have access to the network
The first two being relatively easily obtained through social engineering...

I'm sharing a DSL connection with a few neighbors and we are sharing the costs. Your rule wouldn't be compatible with our agreement, because of the free rider problem.
Maybe some kind of great "I share mine if you share yours"-club could make it possible to get "free" wifi access when away from home. For now there are unrestricted hotspots around, and if that fails, GPRS coverage is pretty good here in Denmark.
Lars -> WEP is broken*. Attackers can change their MAC address to one of the authorized ones, found by sniffing the network.
