Scoble attempts to say something, anything about the half-a-billion euro fine that the EU has smacked Microsoft with after finding them guilty of the usual crimes of anti-competitive and predatory behavior.
But as I read it, I recognize who's really talking: It's Krusty the Clown — everybody's favorite corporate shill from the Simpsons!
The reenactment of The Last Temptation of Krust is uncanny. In the episode, Krusty is reborn as a stand-up comedian who's done endorsing shady products and has started telling it like it is. He's burning dollar bills and fighting the corporate fat cats. All full of renegade energy, just like Scoble:
I hated that one company got so powerful over the industry. I hated that one guy, Gates, got so rich... I hated that I thought I had no say over products that I used every hour of every day. I hated that Microsoft seemed to force me to do things... I hated that Microsoft would aim its economic power at companies and individuals
But then Krusty is approached by two "Wall Street weasels" that wants him to endorse the Canyonero—an SUV that's "12 yards long, 2 lanes wide, 65 tons of American Pride!" Krusty first rejects, but is finally convinced when they offer him a fully loaded Canyonero.
At his next act, Krusty tells the story about the weasels and their attempt to get him to sell out. The crowd cheers at his rejection. Then he switches over and starts to lavishly praise the Canyonero: "I'm tellin' ya, the Canyonero is the Cadillac of automobiles!". Krusty sold out. Which is, again, just like Scoble:
Well, some things got me excited. For one, I saw a prototype of Longhorn (before I knew I was going to be offered a job here). It amazed me. Microsoft was doing things +I+ wanted in an operating system. Better searching for your file system. Better UI. Better development environment. Better video and audio performance. Freaking awesome seamless video built in (you gotta see this to appreciate it). Better fonts. Better browsing. Ink built in. And tons of other things built in.
Yep. Scoble got his fully loaded Longhorn-powered Canyonero!
The Simpsons episode ends with one of the most catchy tunes ever produced for the show in the Cayonero commercial. Read the lyrics while you listen to the song:
You don't need to be gifted with much imagination to insert words like Microsoft, Windows, Netscape, European Commision, and anti-trust. Try it. Just a few words and the commercial is even more hysterically funny than in its original composition.
BTW, I welcome the community to decorate the lyrics to Canyonero with the most appropriate links that can be found. It would be funny to have all the key words linked up. Use the comments.
