I've been a bad blogger and a bad evangelist for Rails with this silent treatment of late. It's not been for lack of progress, though. The presentation of Rails at Roskilde University last Thursday went smashing. Lots of interested nods. A happy sponsor and a handshake from the head honcho at the faculty. Good times. A video of the two-hour show will be coming shortly, I'm promised.
But that's not all. Active Record, the model part and ORM layer for Rails, is almost finished for release. I've been adding a ton of documentation to calm my own qualms with lack of documentation in many open source projects. I promised myself that Rails would be different, so it's great to see that promise finally coming into effect. Thanks to the wonderful support of Luke Holden, we've also added native support for PostgreSQL and SQLite — in addition to the MySQL driver.
Expect a release of Active Record within just a very few days. Luke is just adding a final full-fledged example of Active Record that'll involve all the different features and show it all off. And Jamis Buck is working on a revision to the SQLite driver so conversion to native Ruby types will be more robust. And I'm typing up the final pieces of documentation.
I really hope that it's going to be worth the wait for the eager anticipators. I've been getting great feedback on Active Record from all the beta testers and from the presentations I've been giving, so that's a good sign at least. It really is something quite special in the ORM space. Distinctly different in its unabashed zeal for simplicity.
Rails is tied its tracks together
But that's still not all. The whole package, Rails in all its glory, is also coming along really nicely. We're gathering examples, tutorials, and more with a rapid pace. The Action Pack (which is the new name for Action Controller + Action View) is pretty polished, though still lacking behind Active Record in documentation.
As soon as I'm done with this damned bachelor's project (in which my passion has been waning steadily as Instiki, Rails, Basecamp, and yet-to-be-announced have taken off) is over and out, I'll wrap up an initial release of Rails. It's already very usable. I built a small system at the Roskilde presentation in just an hour with it. And there's a handful of projects being built by the beta testers.
Also, since I've getting off early with my bachelor's degree (I'm done, done, done on June 8th!) there's a very real chance that something resembling Rails v1.0 will be presentable at the Building of Basecamp workshop in Chicago at June 27th. Have you signed up yet? Just four spots left.
Enough babbling. Back to work (I hear Jason say).
