With my work on Rails and the bachelor's project deadline in less than a week, I've had less than no time to work on bringing Instiki further towards an important 1.0 release. That doesn't mean my love for the project has went away. Far from it.
We're using Instiki aggressively in the bachelor study group. It is at the same time the subject of investigation and the method with which we document this investigation. Exciting stuff. Especially since the latter requires a paper-based output at some point. Yes, I too was sad to hear that you can't turn in an URL to a wiki as your bachelor's project.
Anyway, this paper-based output will be constructed from LaTeX. Which means that we have to convert the entire assignment from a textile-based Instiki to Tex format. This has proved to be a lot easier than first anticipated. I've hacked RedCloth to spit out Tex codes instead of HTML and we're using the HomePage as a table of contents.
The table of contents then pull in each page and place it under a section reflecting it's place in the hierarchy. That's easier to show than say, so:
- Introduction
- Project statement
- Organization
- Methodology
Is turned into:
\section{Introduction}
All the content from the introduction wiki page
\subsection{Project statement}
All the content from the project statement wiki page
\subsection{Organization}
All the content from the organization wiki page
\section{Methodology}
All the content from the methodology wiki page
This process isn't currently streamlined, so Instiki will just produce the Tex file, which you then run through Tex manually for the output. Oh, and you need the UTF-8 package for LaTeX. I expect to beautify this process at some point, so if Instiki is running on a machine with LaTeX available, you'll be able to export the entire web as PDF book generated from a TOC page like described above.
What else?
Before 1.0, I'll try to rid the system of as many known bugs as possible. The widespread adoption of Instiki has identified a bunch of issues and the Instiki.org wiki is proving an excellent place to gather these reports.
I'll also do good on the promise to add file uploads, which is a highly requested feature especially for internal wiki use. And we'll polish the color diffs even further (a lot of good work has been done here in collaboration between Bill Atkins, Denis Mertz, and Xen).
So. Instiki is not going anywhere.
