The new version of Instiki ships among other options a native OS X client (2.7 MB), which comes complete with Ruby 1.8 and all the libraries needed to run from a double-click. It's a nice demonstration of how web-applications can blend with the native GUI and serve as a platform for making quick multi-os apps (I intend to do a Windows version at some point as well).

That works very well. You've just lowered the threshold of use quite a bit.
A window's version would be great as well. Giving people the ability to throw up a departmental or project wiki right from a windows desktop machine, is a huge step ahead.

Windows is just awkward to work with since everything has to physically end up in one file (the .exe) unlike OS X that has a more sensible approach with Instiki.app just being a directory that's treated as a launchable program.
So I don't know when a Windows version will come to be.

not properly related to this news, but I noticed the latex output in instiki and loved it.
Now I wonder: would it be possible to use latex directly to produce math-related stuff (dunno how to map it to html.. maybe producing an img and embedding it, or using some math related markup..)

They basically solve the problem you've encountered. I would not be surprised if the amount of work needed to make their idea generic (ie. usable for any app in any language) is low. I will be looking into that.

I've already upgraded my Ruby to 1.8.2 and installed the Gem packages. Do you know how this installer behaves if a system already has Ruby on it? I don't want to mess anything up and wondered if this installed just assumes that a system doesn't have the necessary stuff (if so, is that a good idea?). Thanks for any reply. I'm interested in trying it out.
