We've been pretty tight-lipped about the numbers on Basecamp, but we're now going to push two of them because we just couldn't stay quiet any more. So here's the official addition to the Basecamp website:

From individuals managing their home improvement projects, to professors managing their classrooms, to small and big businesses managing their client and internal projects, everyone is using Basecamp to keep their projects and ideas organized.

We're extremely proud to have gotten this far with a team of what amounts to about two and a half full timers. What's even more amazing is that we've been able to scale without adding a single person. That was one of the goals from day one: Build a product that doesn't require organizational scaling.

If you want to know how we did it, you really should consider attending the third Building of Basecamp. It's on November 9th in San Francisco. We're teaming up with Adaptive Path who are going to talk about Building Blogger the day before.

For the last workshop, people gave us a 4.76 out of 5 rating on whether they thought it was money and time well spent.

Maybe is time to internationalize it and trasnlate basecamp to another languajes (It will benefit rails too I guess). I think that basecamp is the perfect tool for my projects but almost all of my clients only speaks Spanish.

It tickles me that the name of my favourite philosopher (Husserl) is used in the screen shots...

Rails looks like a great project btw - very impressed by it. I'm really pleased to see Ruby being used to such good effect (I tried to interest my team in Ruby years ago, and after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, and several years, they are still deeply mired in J2EE, and have nothing to show for it....)

Can you share som tech numbers? How many hits/minute? How Ruby and Rails stack up? What improvements/caching has been implemented for performance? What kind of hardware are you running?

Checking my expectations about commercially sensitive data at the door... like JB, I'm also interested in technical/ performance stats. We're currently in the process of choosing the best platform and architecture for the development of a mid-sized ('0,000's users) text-driven web application.

Unlike some, I'm lucky enough to already've piqued the interest of both my dev team and my sponsor in using Ruby on Rails. Obviously we'll stress test at some point, but it would be helpful to have some idea of how Rails is scaling in it's biggest (current) live implementation...

Basecamp is currently scaling very well. We're still on our first server (running both Apache/mod_ruby and MySQL), so there's amble room for growth. It's a dual Xeon 2.2ghz running of SCSI drives.

Different parts of the system scale with varying degree. Some really heavy pages will only give 5 requests per second while others yield around 200. So it's hard to give a clear picture here.

We haven't yet done any serious caching (besides keeping a few calculated counts in the database), but that's partly because of the nature of Basecamp. We have fairly complex pages, but not that my simultaneous connections.

Big public, content-based sites usually have an easier time caching, but then more visitors.

Thanks for the insight David. It'll be interesting to know what constitutes "really heavy" pages... Given it's an online app, concurrency will not be such an issue for us either. Oh, and a clarification: that user-base is "potential" rather than guaranteed. If only it was so easy ;-)

Still, no matter what platform we choose - at some point we'll need to take the sensible approach: get something representative in, set it right and hammer away.
