Matthew Langham has a hilarious post on podcasting. Or, so I hope it's intended. It's really short, so I'll reprint:
Podcasting...who needs it? I'm sorry but I just don't get it. I mean isn't it just an easier way of downloading audio files to your MP3 player? So? Where's the beef? Just because everyone can now become a broadcaster - doesn't mean everyone will want to listen to you - does it. Bah humbug.
If it's not a good joke, I pity Langham for his inability to appreciate the obvious contradiction in denouncing podcasting from a weblog. Replace podcasting with weblogging and "easier way to download MP3" with "easier way to post to the web". Weblogs were never about having the largest audience, Podcasting won't be either, and I doubt the video theme following that will be.

While I'm still amazed that, at this point in the evolution of the Internet and personal publishing, there are some people who still don't 'get it' (...even those that are actually using the format to express their own opinions), I'm thrilled and excited to watch as Podcasting is taking off faster than almost any type of technology/format/medium has before.
It is resonating with people on a deeper level. It certainly has for me as I sit here listening to Dave Slusher over at Evil Genius Chronicles (http://www.evilgeniuschronicles.org/) in my iTunes. There is an intimacy and immediacy of audio and video that is so easily understood and experienced by people who may not even get what 'traditional text-based' weblogs are all about.
Podcasting will certainly morph and change and may even grow into a new name (especially with the onset of video enclosures). But unlike the promise of Push and Pull technologies of the late 90's or the hype of Java becoming a simple, universal language and platform, time-shifted-internet-based-delivery of audio and video files is going to grow at exponential speeds.
And for those who don't 'get it', great. More bandwidth for the rest of us! :-)
