Despite my obvious OS X/*nix bias, Rails works great on Windows. It's really easy to install as well thanks in large parts to the One-click Ruby Installer by Andy Hunt and Curt Hibbs. And to prove just how easy it is, Tobias Luetke has created three movies showing you every step of the way:
- Lesson 1: Setting up Ruby, RubyGems, and getting Rails loaded
- Lesson 2: XAMPP installation and database integration.
- Lesson 3: Making the jump from WEBrick to Apache.

Any chance continuing the last lesson all the way to the fastcgi install? Cant seem to get the darn thing to work on windoz -- getting "GetOverlappedResult() failed" .

To very minor ommisions from the videos. In httpd.conf the line "AddHandler cgi-script .cgi" needs to be uncommented and in my case with the current version of the tools I also needed to create the folder 'blog/tmp'

WARNING: beginners problem ;-)
Very nice instructions! It saved my day (I think...).
I have one problem: after going through all the steps (on Windows/XP) , when it came to launching rails in my c:\dev\ directory I got the following message:
ruby: Permission denied -- c:/ruby/bin/rails (LoadError)
I checked that c:/ruby/bin/ is on my PATH (although it says "c:\ruby\bin") in response to "ECHO %PATH%".
Did I overlook something? Is there another forum somewhere where I should go to with this question (no IRC please, I'm too old to even follow the conversations without getting completely dizzy... ;-))? Thanks for any help.

Thank you Tobias for the great tutorials. I'm having a problem after following them, however, and I hope your or someone can help.
I get rails running using WebBrick without problems. I have XAMPP installed, as well, and was able to get rails on apache working OK.
The problem for me is that I can get either XAMPP or the blog working, but not both together. As soon as I add the Virtual Hosts and host file lines, XAMPP fails.
I even tried two virtual hosts and entries in host file. Here is the section from httpd.conf.
ServerName blog
DocumentRoot c:/rails/blog/public/
ErrorLog c:/rails/blog/log/apache.log
Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride all
Allow from all
Order allow,deny
ServerName xampp
DocumentRoot c:/xampp/htdocs/
ErrorLog c:/xampp/apache/logs/error.log
Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks

When I try to load xampp in browser, I get the Rails welcome page.
Any ideas?
