I've been a test-driven developer for quite a while, but I haven't really gotten into the religious test-first branch yet. Usually, I'm too impatient. I have a good idea and want to execute on it right away. Then, when I see it in code, I'll come back to do the tests.
I have done short spurts of test-first — some tasks just seem to invite it — but not as a regular approach over a longer and sustained period of time. I want to give that a try. For a month. Where I can't right any code until I've seen a test fail.
It's one of my 43 things.

Please expand: I am lead to think that TDD prescribes tests to be written *before* any code; that, per definition, is a test-first practice. Indeed, I believe TDD is about letting tests guide the micromanagement of code design; so how can they help you drive your code if you write them *after* the code? How can that be possibly considered a TDD approach?!?

one of the reasons why i do write the tests first: it's boring to write them afterwards. when you thinking that everything works, why would i write a test for it then?

Giulio, you can write a test just after you design a small part of the stuff, write tests for it and refactor it in a more testable way if necessary. Then you go on with the work.
This way you work is still test driven, but not test first.
A Real Test Man would probably realize that if he'd designed the test before the part of the app he'd have saved time, but I think if someone is not trained enough in writing tests he'd find simple tdd easier than test first.

I think writing tests after writing code can still be a help. They can help verify that the code still works after you have made changes, fixed bugs or implemented new features.

One good thing about writing tests first is that you get a feel for how you want to implement a modules interface before you actually go through the trouble of making the module functional. I've often had an idea in my head for how I want some module or class to be accessed. Then I start writing the tests, and I realize that the "great design" I came up with is crap when it comes to actually _using_ the interface. If I had coded the module before the tests, I might be several days into work that would never see the light of day. (Or worse---it _would_ see the light of day, and whoever used it would be forced to deal with a poor interface design!)
