I think the jump to rails is still too difficult. I am on OS X, and have read countless tutorials on getting a testbed up and I can't get it right. There are too many options; rubygems, darwinports, binaries... Which (combo) one is the easiest? Someone should make an explanation of all the different options, and a way to get this up and going from an out of the box OS X setup, including final configuration.
Those inexperienced with the terminal are never going to figure out how to change the path to the OS X bash. So instead they use darwinports, ruby, rubygems, rails... then what? Where is the all inclusive step by step idiots guide.
Maybe you don't want the non OS X/Unix/Linux expert, but there are so few options besides TextDrive.

Dude, a) there are ten trillion blog postings with the step-by-step rails OS X install. b) It takes...five minutes to install on OS X (presuming you have the DB already installed, I did it the other day). c) there's a ruby script for changing the path.

The buzz around this is exciting, it has got me wanting to develop again, which is great. it dawned on me that there is a move away from LAMP, particularly on textdrive. MySQL remains, but lighttpd is replacing apache; Ruby on Rails is replacing Perl/PHP and BSD is supplanting Linux.
So perhaps we need a new acronym I propose LMBR, lighttpd - MySQL - BSD and Ruby on Rails, pronounced LiMBeR, the definition is nice too http://www.answers.com/limber
I'm really looking forward to developing again....
